Beloved Former Fire Chief From Westchester Dies At 68

A former fire chief from Northern Westchester who dedicated most of his life to his department is remembered for always helping his community.

Longtime Ossining resident Raymond Lips, the former chief of the Millwood Fire Department and life member, died suddenly at his home on Tuesday, April 9 at the age of 68, according to his obituary. 

Born in 1955, Lips graduated from Ossining High School in 1973 and earned an Associate's Degree from Westchester Community College before joining Otto A. Lips Electric, the family business. 

In addition to his career, Lips was a lifelong firefighter who spent many years serving the Millwood community, including his time as Fire Chief from 2000 to 2002. 

In a post on social media, the department commented on the immense loss: "Members of the Millwood Fire Co. #1 send our condolences to the family and friends of Ray, and thank him for his years of service to the community and our department." 

Lips is survived by his wife, Patricia; his mother, Frances; his children, Pamela and Brian; his grandchildren, Johnathan, Jack, and Aislin; and his sisters, Stephanie, Charlene, Jennifer, and Bevrlee. 

A wake for Lips will be held on Sunday, April 14 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Dorsey Funeral Home in Ossining at 14 Emwilton Pl., with services at 7 p.m.
